29th January 2010 - 4 Steps to Communicating your way to Success
You don’t have to be “nice” to progress your career but you do have to be able to communicate. If people know that you will listen to them and respond positively, they will return to you time and again for opinions and support. By being direct and clear with your colleagues you demonstrate command and intelligence, which is in turn respected and relied upon.

You must be able to communicate effectively with everyone you come into contact with; your boss, your peers, clients and suppliers must all react warmly to you in order for you progress, to win contracts and for you to lead efficiently.

PCS Executive recommend following these four rules for effective communication to develop your relationships and your career:

1. Clarity There’s a time for blue sky thinking – if that is what someone wants to hear – but most people want the facts without superfluous and unintelligible jargon, which in the end only masks your meaning. If you can demonstrate a clear understanding of your goals, be it in your career or work project, people will respond positively with an outcome that is both right for you and your company.

2. Control It is in our nature as humans to copy our peers so if you communicate with authority, clarity, and positivity then people will respond in a similar manner, creating a sense of achievement that will be infectious to those around you. On the flip side, by copying the inflections of voice and the body language of others they come to trust you more and feel more comfortable in your presence.

3. Listen We all love to talk and express our own opinions but if nobody listens it can be frustrating. Whether it’s an opinion on a new process or simply what’s being served in the canteen, by listening to the beliefs of others you become a reliable and attentive member of the organisation. But listening does not imply silence; it is about responding aptly and demonstrating an interest in what others have to say. Nodding and smiling won’t get you anywhere but remembering that Sally lived in Stoke or John wants to present the next project to the board then you’re more likely to be approached by them in the future.

4. Think Always think before you speak. When annoyed or frustrated do not show your anger, it is unprofessional and can make you appear aggressive and intimidating. By taking a moment to think about the source of your frustration, you will be able to communicate more clearly and with understanding, which people are more likely to respond well to. By thinking before you speak you are more able to communicate with clarity, and taking your time to think gives you more time to listen to others. Whilst expression and conviction can make a positive impression, being too opinionated can be intimidating, so do stop and think about the purpose of your statements and you can make the difference between effecting ideas and offending others.

PCS Executive state that part of being able to communicate effectively is having confidence in yourself and your abilities, so do not force anything you do not feel comfortable with. Begin by watching the way others communicate with each other and compare this to your own techniques. By making a comparison between yourself and you peers you can gain a greater understanding of your relationship within your working community. Once you understand this relationship you can begin to make steps towards integrating yourself more clearly into your work environment and really stand out to your boss and your peers.
